Majors, Minors, Concentrations and Graduate Programs

The degree programs in the department provide for a multidisciplinary, scientific foundation by interrelating geology, geography, ecology, biology, climatology, agriculture as well as math, chemistry, and physics to the disciplines of Earth Sciences or Soil Science. All courses taught in the department incorporate Cal Poly’s unique hands-on learn-by-doing educational philosophy, which brings relevance to the educational process and leads to student retention.

Our department offers a B.S. degree in earth sciences, a B.S. degree in soil science, a minor in soil science, and a M.S. degree in soil science, which is offered jointly with the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences.

The degree programs, at both the undergraduate and graduate level, are flexible in order to provide the basis for students to learn, as well as understand and apply the principles of science and technology to unlimited career opportunities in hundreds of different fields. The majors provide excellent preparation for students who will take a position in any earth or soil science related industry upon graduation, as well as those entering graduate schools to obtain advanced degrees.
